The standard device for each tester varies accordingly, for example: a dead weight tester for calibrating pressure gauges and a dry block temperature tester for calibrating temperature measuring instruments. In macroeconomics, it is a strategy for finding numerical values for the parameters of artificial economic worlds. A model is calibrated when its parameters are quantified from occasional empiricism or unrelated economic studies or selected to ensure that the model mimics a particular feature of historical data. The selection of one or more standards is the most visible part of the calibration process. Ideally, the standard has less than 1/4 of the measurement uncertainty of the device to be calibrated. Some organizations, such as nuclear power plants, collect calibration data “as found” before performing routine maintenance. Once routine maintenance and deficiencies detected during calibration have been corrected, a “left” calibration is performed. One of the first pressure gauges was the mercury barometer attributed to Torricelli (1643),[19] which drained atmospheric pressure with mercury. Soon after, manometers filled with water were designed. All this would have linear calibrations with gravimetric principles, where the difference in level would be proportional to the pressure. Normal units of measurement would be the convenient inches of mercury or water. There may be specific connection techniques between the standard and the instrument to be calibrated that may affect calibration. In electronic calibrations with analog phenomena, for example, the impedance of cable connections can directly influence the result. Strictly speaking, the term “calibration” refers only to the act of comparison and does not include any subsequent adjustments. Statistically, this is a type of regularization, but the specific goal is not only to avoid overadjustment, but also to ensure that the right macroeconomic predictions we get are derived from a good micromodel that allows us to use it for policy analysis. This is the motivation behind calibration.
Whether the predictions are actually good is, of course, another question, but that`s the goal: to create a plausible micromodel halfway, insert plausible microparameter values halfway, and check how well macro predictions match certain macro data.
