Is It Legal to Send Cash via Usps

“With respect to sending cash by mail, no, we do not prohibit it and continue to advise customers on the options available to them,” Postal Service spokesman David Partenheimer wrote in a statement to The Associated Press if it does not arrive at its destination. So, yes, you can send money by mail. You can send any amount of cash by mail, but the U.S. Postal Service only insures cash up to a maximum of $50,000.00. USPS insures any money you send by mail up to its full value, subject to certain limits. For regular domestic mail, the maximum value of insurance is only $15. For recorded emails, the limit is $50,000. You must declare the total value of the money you send, even if it exceeds the amount of insurance. The post office needs proof of the value of the currency before shipping the item, such as cash with proof of the exchange rate if you are sending foreign currency. Otherwise, a claim for compensation for damage may be rejected. However, I recently had a discussion with a friend who claimed that sending money by mail was illegal. I was surprised and had never heard of it.

Did my grandmother violate a federal law by sending me $10.00 on my birthday? Had everyone`s grandmother broken any federal law? Would my grandmother end up in jail? On July 10, 2020, Japan Post stopped buying international postal orders from the postal service. (Japan Post opened on the 31st. In December 2019, the U.S. stopped selling international mandates.) THE FACTS: The postal service has several recommendations for customers who plan to send money by mail. After doing some research on the subject, I was relieved to discover that it is not illegal to send money by mail, even though many people think so. Does it sound suspicious? Of course it is, but it`s not illegal. Those who send cash by registered mail can insure it up to $50,000. You can send chain letters asking for low-value items, such as prescriptions or postcards, but chain letters asking for money are prohibited by federal law. If you send money to 10 friends under a “get rich quick” program — even if it`s just $5 — then you`re committing a federal crime. USPS recommends that you write on the envelope, “I received this in the mail and believe it may be illegal” and deliver the chain letters to your local postmaster. While it may be legal to send money by mail, it`s not a good idea.

If your letter is lost, stolen or damaged in transit, there is no way for you or the recipient to recover the money. Another problem with sending money is when the recipient claims they never received anything. How do you prove that the money arrived? Personal money orders or cheques offer better security, especially if you use the requested acknowledgement of receipt, which means that the recipient must sign for the shipment shipped. When transferring a large sum of money, it is always safer to make a transfer. It has never been particularly sensible to send more than a small amount of cash by post, especially since in the event of loss, theft or destruction of such a shipment during transport, neither the sender nor the intended recipient can use the funds. It`s even less of a good idea now that safer methods of sending money from one place to another are available, such as money orders and bank transfers. One of the main reasons lawyers exist is to make sure things happen the way they`re supposed to. I would be remiss if I missed the opportunity to tell you that it is a terrible idea to send a large amount of money in the mail. For God`s sake, send a check.

Nowadays, the best way to transfer money to someone else can be through an online service like Venmo or PayPal.
