November 2019) – Lambda Legal announced today that Michael D. Shutt, former senior director of campus life at Emory University and associate assistant professor at the University of Georgia, will join the nation`s leading LGBTQ legal law organization as director of Lambda Legal`s Atlanta-based southern regional office. Michael is also involved in community service. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Equality Foundation of Georgia and a member of the Advisory Board of the LGBTQ Institute of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta. Previously, he was co-chair of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals. Originally from Indiana, Michael holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Administration from Michigan State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Student Business Administration from the University of Georgia, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development in the College of Education.

As Southern Regional Director, Shutt will oversee programs and public relations efforts in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Mississippi. Lambda Legal is a national organization that advocates for the full recognition of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and all people living with HIV through impact litigation, education and awareness-raising. Michael has 20 years of strategic leadership experience in higher education at Emory University and the University of Georgia. At Emory, he has held a variety of positions, including Associate Dean and Director of the Office of LGBT Life, Interim Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Senior Director of Campus Life.

Prior to Emory, he championed the University of Georgia`s LGBT Resource Center, the first LGBT resource center at a public university in Georgia. He began his career at UGA as a health educator. In addition to working on his own campuses, Michael has consulted with institutions such as New York University, Princeton University, Spelman College, and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the development and evaluation of LGBT support services. Michael is also involved in community service.
